South Conway County School District
Love, Serve, Care, Today #LSC
On Tuesday, March 30th Governor Hutchinson lifted the mask mandate for the state of Arkansas. This action by Governor Hutchinson does not change the guidance and recommendation by the Division of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) for school districts in the state of Arkansas.
The South Conway County School District (SCCSD) will continue the requirement to wear masks by students and staff until the District can evaluate all data to make a more informed decision. The health and safety of our students and staff are high priorities.
Factors in making a final decision include new guidance from DESE and the ADH:
Responding to Positive COVID-19 Cases in a School
If an individual who has been in a school has tested positive for COVID-19, districts are required to continue to follow the established reporting processes and requirements for quarantine.
Close Contact Determination
This document refers to “close contact” with an individual who is test-confirmed to have COVID-19. The definition of close contact in schools is evolving with the ongoing understanding of COVID-19, and individual scenarios should be determined in consultation with the district point of contact and the ADH.
The CDC defines a close contact as an individual confirmed to have been within six feet for 15 cumulative minutes or longer within a 24-hour period during the infectious period of a person who has tested positive for COVID-19; however, additional factors like case/contact masking (i.e., both the infectious individual and the potential close contact have been consistently and properly masked), vaccination status, and prior infection status may affect this determination.
It is also important to note that universal mask-wearing also is a factor in allowing districts to reduce physical distancing from 6 feet to the new guideline of 3 feet.
Throughout this school year, the SCCSD has followed the requirements outlined in a COVID-19 School Board Resolution, passed by the board in August. These procedures have allowed us to maintain a safe, healthy environment for our students and staff. The SCCSD does appreciate your support and cooperation in this matter as we continue to evaluate the best path forward to maximize the health and safety of our students and staff.
